EAST BATON ROUGE TEACHERS FEDERAL CREDIT UNION

CREDIT UNION HISTORY:  The Credit Union was chartered in 1951 under the provisions of the Federal Credit Union Act, Public Law 467, 73d Congress 1st Session, entitled, “ An Act to establish a Federal Credit Union System, to establish further market for securities of the United States and to make available to people of small means credit for provident purposes through a national system of cooperative credit, thereby helping to stabilize the credit structure of the United States”. 

In 1983 the Charter was amended to include those having the following common bond:   “Teachers and employees of the East Baton Rouge Parish School Board who work in East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana; spouses of persons who died while within the field of membership of this credit union; employees of this credit union; persons retired as pensioners or annuitants from the above employment; members of their immediate families; and organizations of such persons.” 

In 1993 the Charter was amended to read as follows; “The field of membership shall be limited to those having the following common bond: Teachers, employees, and students of the East Baton Rouge Parish School System who work or attend school in East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana; members of the Eastern Louisiana Voices of Praise Association headquartered in Baton Rouge, Louisiana who qualify for membership in accordance with the association’s by laws as they existed on April 29, 1993; spouses of persons who died while within the field of membership of this credit union; employees of this credit union; persons retired as pensioners or annuitants from the above employment; members of their immediate families; and organizations of such persons.”  And where as the amendment is in the best interest of the members and is not inconsistent with law. 

In October of 1999, under the request of NCUA and the board of directors of the North Baton Rouge Federal Credit Union, a merger was created, effectively merging North Baton Rouge Federal Credit Union into East Baton Rouge Teachers Federal Credit Union. The Credit Union has expanded its membership by adding additional members from within this group in the area of East Baton Rouge Parish.
